In the year 1966, Nobel Prize winner CK Kao concluded his study on “Dielectric-Fiber Surface Waveguides for optical frequencies”[1] envisaging that “a fiber of glassy material (…) represents a possible practical optical waveguide with important potential as a new form of communication medium”[1]. He was talking about the low losses optical fibers (or a “dielectric-fiber waveguide (…) with a circular cross-section”[1]) as presently used in optical fiber communication systems. In the following years, the optical fibers have literally revolutionized the telecommunication industry by providing higher performance, more reliable telecommunication links with ever-decreasing bandwidth cost. A beneficial side effect of this revolution is the high volume production of optoelectronic and fiber optic components and the diffusion worldwide of a true information superhighway built of glass.
